(ICPSD 2018)


 

The 5th International Conference on Poverty and Sustainable Development 2018 (ICPSD 2018) was organized by The International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM), Sri Lanka in collaboration with Center for Sustainability, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura as the Hosting Partner and Yale Global Justice Program as the successful Academic Partners of the Conference. The strategic partners of the conference were Organization for Social Development Initiatives, (OSDI) and Foundation for Innovative Social Development (FISD), Sri Lanka.

Inauguration Ceremony

The Conference was held on 06th – 07th December 2018 in Colombo, Sri Lanka under the theme “Poverty Eradication – SDG Goal 1, Only by Breaking Barriers for Integration”. ICPSD 2018 was chaired by the renowned key persons in the field of Poverty Prof. Sarath Kotagama (Professor of Environmental Science, Department of Zoology, and University of Colombo, Sri Lanka) and Dr. Peter Abrahamson (University of Copenhagen, Denmark).

The opening remarks of ICPSD 2018 were made by Conference Co-Chairs Prof. Sarath Kotagama (University of Colombo, Sri Lanka) and Dr. Peter Abrahamson (University of Copenhagen, Denmark) together with Mr. Isanka P. Gamage (Managing Director, The International Institute of Knowledge Management).

Keynote Forum

Keynote forum was one of the most significant moments during the Conference and it was enlightened by Dr. Robert L. Hawkins (New York University Silver School of Social Work, United States) on the topic “Power, Policy, and the Long-Term Trauma of Poverty: Examples from the U.S. and the Philippines”. Following Dr. Robert L. Hawkins’s speech, Ms. Hanaa Singer (UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Sri Lanka) delivered a speech at the keynote forum as well. Thirdly, Dr. Peter Abrahamson (University of Copenhagen, Denmark) addressed the participants on the topic “A World Free from Want: Poverty and Social Exclusion in the 21st Century” which was a successful one.

ICPSD 2018 provided a great platform for researchers, academics, scholars, and educators from across the globe to share their research findings with one another and to discuss their ideas in relation to the field poverty. The conference provided a refreshing experience for all, especially for the young researchers who had the opportunity to share their research findings on an international platform.

Special features of the conference Round Table Discussion

ICPSD 2018 hosted a round table discussion with the aim of Identifying best practices in the multidimensional fight against poverty and social exclusion. This intensive discussion was moderated by the conference co-chair Dr. Peter Abrahamson (University of Copenhagen, Denmark) and he was able to bring together diverse views and perspectives from all over the world on the topic “Policies to Eradicate Poverty and Social Exclusion: What role for State, Market, and Civil Society? ” Main discussion points were distinguishing global South from global North; emphasizing consequences with respect to class, gender, ethnicity and generation.

PUBLICATION IN PROGRESS

 


All accepted abstracts for 5th International Conference on Poverty and Sustainable Development 2018 (ICPSD 2018) will be published in the conference abstract book with an associated ISBN 978-955-4903-80-7. All full papers will be reviewed through a double blind reviewing process and published electronically with an ISSN 2386 – 1215 number in the proceedings with a DOI Number (DOI prefix: 10.17501).
